O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
A Rich Heffler Music arrangement. The piano begins the piece with a flowing and tranquil statement. The solo joins in with a gentle fragment further setting up a poignant picture. It then breaks into the tune in a rather matter-of-fact manner and then adds more embellishment as it progresses. The middle section is extended to give a solemn meditative mood and then breaks into more action for contrast. The piece ends with a quiet, slow and determined repose.

Sacred Head
This staple hymn of the Chrsitian literature starts out with the woodwinds presenting the theme with subtle splashes of percussive small instruments. The piece explodes into a tutti statement only to fall back into a solemn style in the woodwinds, colored by mallet percussion obligato. After a brief interlude of imitation in the woodwinds the brass take over with an exchange of choral motives. The piece gains strength with a tutti climax and then continues with thematic repetition to further enhance the theme’s importance. The woodwind choir with percussion underpinning makes a solemn statement and then gently settles back to a sense of peace.

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
Four Plus Brass Series- for two Trumpets and two Trombones (with opt. Horn and Tuba for color). Without any introduction the piece begins in four-part harmony and in a deeply reflective expression. As is the original, there are many meter changes. The second section is carried exclusively in the trombones until it is taken over by muted trumpets until consummated with harmonic divergence. The final section is established by the trumpets with subtle underpinning by the trombones. With one final strong presentation of the tune the piece concludes in repose- as one might expect.
