This arrangement is taken from the second movement of Haydn’s “Surprise Symphony.” It follows the form, theme and variations, true to the original- although in a different key. The scoring of this work captures the intent of the original orchestra work, both in flavor and balance,,, a piece that bands can perform with delightful success. The bulk of the work is found in the clarinet section.

A straight forward trio for trombone (with optional horn and baritone TC parts) that is well balance in the scoring. The melody is tossed around between the various parts while the piano tends to act is an obbligato. Solid and functional.

This duet places most of the technic in the flute part while the clarinet (alto sax) is rather straight forward with the melody. The piano part carries an underlying drive that gives the feeling of a march. The flute part is a decorative addition with moments of “all Stars and Stripes.” A bright and celebrated work that will highlight any patriotic venue.
