New Name Written Down In Glory
“New Name Written Down in Glory” is a rousing combination of a new contemporary Christian song by Charity Gayle and the old gospel song “A New Name in Glory” by C. Austin Miles. The words speak of the believer’s name being written in the Book of Life, referred to in Revelation, and receiving a new identity based in God’s love for us. The arrangement attempts to capture the joy of being adopted into the family of God.

SMS: For string quartet and piano. The opening has the strings using a modified melody in a chordal structure. It continues in much the same light with the piano embellishing with lines of elegance. The second section features the melody in the left hand of the piano (doubled in the cello ) with chordal structure in the right, all the while the upper strings adding a shimmering effect with tremolos. Then the quartet continues with full ensemble sound giving way to an unaccompanied trio of the upper three parts. The piece continue on in much the same flavor as the beginning coming to a sweet conclusion.

SMS: Brass quartet for two trumpets and two trombones (opt horn and BHTC) The open passage presents the melodic motif amongst the parts which sets it up for the first presentation of the melody in the trumpets with a gentle contrapuntal fill of the low brass. This continues throughout the entire section. The second section is rich in counterpoint with strong emotion with movement in all parts. The final section is reminiscent of the first which transition to a gentle coda establishing repose.

The piece begins with an arpeggiated paino (alla harp) and then joined by tutti flutes. The theme is stated in the fashion unilt it breaks into a flute trio harmonization, with more vigor. The piece gravitates to a new key where any of the parts can serve as the soloist. The final section is stronger and again uses the benefit of the flute trio harmonies. It progresses to a gentle and quiet repose as if in a pastorale setting.

This trio for Easter renders a simple and gentle movement that is continually flowing with tontrapuntal lines that exudes wonderment- truly a piece that causes reflection. There is activity in each of the parts and the melodic material is passed around for interest. If you want a piece for reflection this might well be the piece for you.

In The Garden
A brass trio for trumpet, horn and trombone with optional parts for trumpet and baritone. A somewhat straightforward piece from the standpoint of melody but it has a constantly evolving sense of texture. It’s as if a person were walking through a garden and reflecting on the surroundings and the implications of what they mean.
